Rolling Along...

life is.

The Sun woke me--well, rather he woke himself as I had been up completely unable to sleep--at 4:30 am Monday morning, complaining of a stomach ache. We got to the bathroom, and he yuked. And then he yuked about every half hour until 4:30PM. So no school. Also, no mandatory appointment with unemployment.

By this evening he was feeling much better, but he still hadn't eaten anything and had kept nothing done but pedialyte. I hope it's not contagious....

I hung shelves in my room. Elfa rocks... you only need to screw in the top brace and voila, shelves! But I figured out why it was so hard to find studs in the walls... I think the walls in this joint or so old, I don't have drywall. I have those slats of wood slathered over with plaster. I hope I have the right anchors. I hope my shelves don't come crashing down...

Why isn't there an automatic insomniac alert network? I've been up since 3. Hope the Sun is all better and that you don't get it.

Yeah, those old plaster walls suck for hanging things. One way to tell if you've screwed into a stud or just lathe is to listen for bits of plaster falling down inside the wall. I get that sound at my house (basically no insulation in the walls) so I can tell when the nails are missing studs.

Oh, yeah. Tons of plaster falling. That's how I figured it out.

Sun's better... so far I'm OK. Thanks!

I hope the Sun is feeling better. Stomach viruses SUCK.

I'm pretty sure those screws and anchors are just he right ones for plaster walls. They look similar - just bigger and sturdier - than ones I've used many times, and everything I've hung has stayed up.

I'm not having the same luck with my Elfa. I actually think I may have hit brick rather than a stud. My kitchen wall is the outside wall of the building and I hit something really hard that I haven't been able to get through so far. So I have to consider putting them on a different wall - though I really wanted them over the counter.

I can't wait to see a picture of your shelves - or get an invitation to come see the real thing.

LOL! You know you don't need an invitation. Just announce yourself and I'll move over.

If you hit brick, then you need a masonry drillbit (3/8, or 1/4) to drill a large hole, plug in the anchor and work from there.

Powertools rock!
